How do I merge images?

Say I have two pictures (.jpg, .png, .tif or whatever), which together are a whole picture—like one side of a mural and the other side of a mural. How do you fuse these pictures together assuming they are the same size (well have the same height)? Without loops how would you input these two images and the output them as the merged image?
